What Is the Dog Activity Calculator?

Calculate your dog's ideal daily exercise duration and intensity based on breed type, age, and health status.

Exercise needs vary enormously between breeds, ages, and health conditions. This calculator gives you a personalised daily exercise recommendation — not just a generic number.

Every result is based on published veterinary research and breed-size-specific growth data — not generic averages. This tool is completely free, works instantly in your browser, and requires no account or sign-up.

How It Works

Base exercise requirements are set by breed energy category — low-energy breeds need 30 minutes daily while high-energy and working breeds need 2+ hours. Age modifiers reduce exercise for puppies (to protect developing joints) and seniors (reduced stamina and joint capacity). Health conditions apply further reductions: joint disease and cardiac conditions significantly limit exercise intensity and duration.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much exercise does my dog need?+
It varies enormously. A Basset Hound needs 30 minutes. A Border Collie needs 2+ hours. Breed type is the biggest factor, followed by age and health.
Can dogs be over-exercised?+
Yes. Puppies can develop joint problems from too much structured exercise. Senior dogs can flare joint pain. Brachycephalic breeds overheat quickly. Always match exercise to your individual dog.
What counts as exercise?+
On-lead walking, off-lead running and play, swimming, fetch, agility, and nose work all count. Mental stimulation (training, puzzle feeders) can supplement physical exercise particularly for intelligent breeds.
My dog seems to need less exercise than the calculator suggests — is that OK?+
Some dogs are naturally less active than their breed suggests. As long as they maintain a healthy weight and BCS, their individual needs are being met. Use body condition, not a number, as your guide.
Does swimming count as exercise for arthritic dogs?+
Yes — hydrotherapy and swimming are excellent low-impact exercises for dogs with arthritis. The buoyancy reduces joint load while maintaining muscle mass and cardiovascular fitness.
