Every calculator on Doggy Calculators is built directly from published veterinary research. We do not invent formulas, estimate values, or base calculations on anecdotal information. Every single number our calculators produce traces back to a published veterinary source that any veterinarian can verify.
This means our results will sometimes differ from general advice you find elsewhere online. That is intentional. Generic advice is written for average dogs. Our calculators are built on the same clinical formulas that trained vets use — adjusted for your individual dog's weight, age, breed, and life stage.

Formula extraction
The exact formula, including all coefficients, multipliers, and adjustment factors, is extracted directly from the source. We do not paraphrase or simplify formulas in ways that would alter results.
Cross-referencing
For medication and toxicity calculators, we cross-reference the primary source against a second independent veterinary reference to confirm consistency. Where sources differ, we present the more conservative (safer) value.
Range and limit validation
We establish clinically appropriate input ranges — for example, minimum and maximum weight values — based on published normal ranges. Inputs outside these ranges display a validation warning rather than a potentially misleading result.
Result framing
Every calculator result is displayed as a reference range, not a single definitive number, wherever the clinical literature presents it that way. Results are always accompanied by a clear instruction to verify with a veterinarian before clinical application.
🔄 How We Keep Content Updated
Veterinary guidelines are updated periodically — drug dosing recommendations change as new clinical evidence emerges, and toxicity data is continuously revised as new substances are assessed. We monitor updates to our primary sources and review our most clinically sensitive calculators (medication and toxicity) on an annual basis.
Each calculator page displays a "last reviewed" date so you always know when the content was most recently assessed against current veterinary references.
