Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about Doggy Calculators — our tools, how they work, and how to get the most from them.

🐾 About Our Calculators
Are all the calculators free?+

Yes — every single calculator on Doggy Calculators is completely free. There is no account required, no premium tier, no email sign-up, and no time limit on usage.

How accurate are the results?+

Our calculators use the same formulas published in peer-reviewed veterinary journals and clinical references including Plumb's Veterinary Drug Handbook and WSAVA guidelines. Results are accurate within the normal variation of the underlying research — but they are reference tools, not replacements for professional veterinary advice.

Can I use these calculators instead of going to the vet?+

No — and we are clear about this on every tool page. Our calculators are designed to inform and assist, not replace veterinary care. They are best used to prepare for vet conversations, understand results, or make everyday decisions like feeding portions.

Do the calculators work for all dog breeds?+

Most tools work for any breed using size category as a proxy for breed-specific differences. Breed-specific calculators are available for 30 popular breeds in the Age, Life Expectancy, and Calorie categories for more precise results.

How often are new calculators added?+

We add new tools regularly based on user requests and gaps we identify in available dog care resources. If you have a tool you would find useful, use the Contact page to suggest it.

🍽️ Feeding & Nutrition Tools
How do I know how much to feed my dog?+

Use our Dog Food Calculator — enter your dog's weight, age, activity level, and your food's calorie content. It uses the veterinary RER formula to give a precise daily gram amount. Always monitor body condition and adjust by 10% if weight trends in the wrong direction.

The bag says a different amount — which should I use?+

Bag guides are for an average dog at moderate activity and tend to overestimate portions. Our calculator uses your dog's actual details and is generally more accurate. Use it as your starting point and adjust based on body condition.

How do puppy feeding amounts differ from adult dogs?+

Puppies need significantly more calories per kilogram of bodyweight than adults because they are fuelling rapid growth. Use the Puppy Feeding Calculator rather than the adult Dog Food Calculator — it uses age-adjusted growth factors that can be 2.5x higher than adult requirements.

💊 Health & Medication Tools
Can I use the medication calculators without a vet?+

Our medication calculators are reference guides showing standard weight-based dose ranges from published veterinary sources. They are not a substitute for a veterinary prescription. Always consult your vet before administering any medication to your dog.

My dog ate something toxic — what should I do?+

Use our toxicity calculators for an immediate risk assessment, then contact your vet or an animal poison helpline immediately. UK: Animal Poison Line 01202 509000. US: ASPCA 888-426-4435. Do not wait for symptoms — always err on the side of caution.

Are the clinical calculators suitable for home use?+

Tools like the IV Fluid Rate, Blood Transfusion, and CRI calculators are designed for qualified veterinary professionals. They require clinical context and should not be used for home treatment. The general health tools (Quality of Life, Body Condition Score, Life Expectancy) are suitable for all dog owners.

⚙️ Technical & Website Questions
Do the calculators work on mobile?+

Yes — every calculator is fully optimised for mobile, tablet, and desktop. You can use them at the vet, on a walk, or anywhere you need a quick answer.

Can I share or save my results?+

Yes — every tool page has Share and Print buttons. Share sends results via your device's share sheet or copies to clipboard. Print opens a clean branded printout with all your inputs and results.

Does Doggy Calculators show ads?+

We may display non-intrusive advertising to support the free tools. We never allow advertisers to influence our content or calculator formulas. All tools remain completely free regardless of advertising.

How do I report an error or suggest a new tool?+

Use our Contact page — we read every message and act on legitimate errors quickly. For tool suggestions, include as much detail as possible about the calculation you need and we will consider it for a future update.
