How It Works

The toxic compound in chocolate is theobromine — a methylxanthine that dogs metabolise far more slowly than humans. The theobromine content varies dramatically by chocolate type: white chocolate contains almost none (35mg per ounce), milk chocolate contains around 64mg, dark chocolate 150-400mg, and pure baking chocolate up to 450mg per ounce.

Risk is assessed by dividing total theobromine ingested by body weight to get mg/kg. GI signs begin at around 20mg/kg. Cardiac arrhythmias and seizures can occur above 40-50mg/kg. Doses above 100mg/kg can be lethal. The calculator converts your inputs and compares to these thresholds.

My dog ate milk chocolate — is it dangerous?+
It depends on the amount and the dog's size. Milk chocolate contains around 64mg theobromine per ounce. A small dog eating even a few squares warrants a vet call. Use the calculator for your specific situation.
What about dark chocolate?+
Dark chocolate is significantly more dangerous — 3-4 times more theobromine per gram than milk chocolate. Any amount of dark chocolate eaten by a small dog should be treated as a veterinary emergency.
Should I make my dog vomit?+
Only if instructed by your vet. Inducing vomiting can help if chocolate was eaten within the last 1-2 hours, but it is not always appropriate and carries its own risks.
