How It Works

Excess vitamin D3 is converted in the liver to calcidiol and then in the kidneys to calcitriol, which dramatically increases calcium absorption from the gut and calcium release from bones, causing hypercalcaemia. Elevated calcium causes mineralisation of soft tissues, particularly the kidneys and cardiovascular system.

The toxic threshold for vitamin D3 in dogs is approximately 10,000–20,000 IU/kg body weight. The calculator converts supplement dose (IU per tablet) × quantity to total IU, then calculates IU/kg.
