How It Works
Myristicin — the primary toxic compound in nutmeg — is a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) and psychoactive compound. In sufficient doses it causes hallucinations, tachycardia, and CNS excitation followed by depression. The toxic dose in dogs is not well established, but significant toxicity is reported above approximately 1 teaspoon (2.5g) of ground nutmeg for average-sized dogs.
