How It Works
Ethanol is absorbed rapidly in dogs and causes CNS depression, hypoglycaemia, and hypothermia at doses far below those affecting humans. Dogs have lower body mass and different metabolic rates, making them significantly more vulnerable per unit of alcohol consumed.
The calculator estimates ethanol volume based on beverage type and quantity, then calculates ml of pure ethanol per kg of body weight. Risk thresholds are based on ASPCA toxicology guidelines: sedation begins at 0.5 ml/kg ethanol, severe toxicity at 1–2 ml/kg, and potentially fatal respiratory depression above 4 ml/kg.
