How It Works

Thiosulphate compounds in garlic (n-propyl disulphide and others) oxidise haemoglobin, forming Heinz bodies — damaged protein inclusions that cause red blood cells to be destroyed by the spleen (extravascular haemolysis). The resulting anaemia can be severe. Garlic powder is approximately 4× more concentrated than fresh garlic by weight, making even small amounts of powder potentially significant. No — there is no established safe dose of garlic for dogs. Some older or natural remedy sources suggest garlic supplements are safe or beneficial for dogs, but veterinary toxicologists and the ASPCA recommend against any garlic supplementation. Even small repeated doses can accumulate and cause red blood cell damage.
Is cooked garlic less toxic than raw garlic?+
Cooking does slightly reduce thiosulphate content but does not make garlic safe for dogs. Cooked garlic is still toxic — it simply requires a slightly larger amount to cause the same level of red blood cell damage as raw garlic.
Which dog breeds are most sensitive to garlic?+
