What Is the Dog Avocado Toxicity Calculator?

Assess the risk when your dog eats avocado — flesh, skin, pit or leaves — based on dog weight and amount consumed.

Avocados contain persin, a toxin that affects dogs differently depending on which part they ate. The pit also poses a serious obstruction risk. Enter the details below to assess the risk level for your dog.

Every result is based on published veterinary research and breed-size-specific growth data — not generic averages. This tool is completely free, works instantly in your browser, and requires no account or sign-up.

How It Works

Persin is a fungicidal toxin present in all parts of the avocado plant — leaves contain the most, followed by the skin, then the pit and flesh. Dogs are moderately susceptible to persin; less so than birds or rabbits, but persin can still cause myocardial damage, respiratory distress, and gastrointestinal upset at sufficient doses.

The calculator assesses risk based on the part consumed (which determines persin concentration), the estimated amount, and the dog's body weight. Additionally, avocado flesh is approximately 15% fat by weight — sufficient to trigger acute pancreatitis in susceptible dogs regardless of persin toxicity. Risk ratings are based on ASPCA Animal Poison Control guidelines and published veterinary toxicology literature.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is avocado always toxic to dogs?+
Not always critically so, but it is never safe. Small amounts of flesh may only cause mild stomach upset in a large dog. However, the pit poses an obstruction risk, the skin and leaves contain high persin concentrations, and even flesh can trigger pancreatitis due to its high fat content. There is no truly safe amount.
My dog ate guacamole — is that dangerous?+
Yes — guacamole contains avocado (persin risk + fat), and typically also contains onion and garlic which are toxic to dogs. Even a small amount of guacamole should prompt a vet call, particularly for small dogs.
My dog swallowed the avocado pit — what do I do?+
This is an emergency. The pit is large enough to cause a life-threatening gastrointestinal obstruction. Call your vet immediately. Do not attempt to induce vomiting — the pit could cause damage on the way back up. X-rays are needed to assess the situation.
Can dogs eat avocado oil?+
Avocado oil contains very low levels of persin compared to the flesh or skin. However it is still very high in fat and can trigger pancreatitis. It is not recommended for dogs. Do not add it to your dog's food.
Which dog breeds are most at risk from avocado?+
All breeds are at risk from persin and obstruction. For pancreatitis risk specifically, breeds with a known predisposition include Miniature Schnauzers, Yorkshire Terriers, Cocker Spaniels, and Cavalier King Charles Spaniels.
