How It Works

Ethylene glycol itself has moderate toxicity, but it is rapidly metabolised in the liver to glycolic acid and oxalic acid — which are highly toxic. Oxalate crystals form in the kidney tubules, causing acute tubular necrosis and irreversible kidney failure. The minimum lethal dose in dogs is approximately 4.4 ml/kg of pure ethylene glycol (or approximately 5ml/kg of standard antifreeze at 95% concentration).
