What Is the Dog Ovulation Calculator?

Predict the exact ovulation window for your female dog based on her heat cycle start date — essential for planned breeding.

Pinpointing ovulation is the single most important factor in successful dog breeding. Dogs are unique among mammals — they ovulate primary oocytes that require a further 48–72 hours to mature before fertilisation is possible. This means the optimal breeding window is not at the start of standing heat, but 2–4 days after ovulation. Missing this window is the most common cause of failed breeding attempts.

Every result is based on published veterinary research and breed-size-specific growth data — not generic averages. This tool is completely free, works instantly in your browser, and requires no account or sign-up.

How It Works

Canine ovulation is triggered by a surge in Luteinising Hormone (LH). Ovulation typically occurs 48–72 hours after the LH surge, which itself usually happens around day 9–11 of the heat cycle (measured from the first day of bleeding). However this varies significantly between individuals — from as early as day 5 to as late as day 21.

The calculator uses the heat start date and cycle pattern to estimate the LH surge window and the resulting ovulation and optimal breeding dates. For precise breeding, progesterone testing or vaginal cytology by a vet is strongly recommended — the calculator provides estimates only.

Frequently Asked Questions

When exactly does a dog ovulate?+
Ovulation typically occurs 48–72 hours after the LH surge, which usually happens around day 9–11 from the first day of bleeding. However this varies enormously between individuals — from day 5 to day 21 — which is why progesterone testing is recommended for planned breeding.
What is the best way to confirm ovulation in dogs?+
Progesterone testing (serum progesterone measurement) is the gold standard. Progesterone rises sharply at the LH surge (to approximately 2ng/ml) and continues rising after ovulation. Most vets recommend testing every 2–3 days starting from day 5–7 of heat. Vaginal cytology (examining cell types under microscope) is a lower-cost alternative but less precise.
Why do many breeding attempts fail even when timed correctly?+
The most common reason is breeding too early — before eggs have matured. Canine eggs are released as primary oocytes that need 48–72 hours of further maturation before they can be fertilised. Breeding at the very start of standing heat is often too early. Other causes include male infertility, structural issues, and progesterone insufficiency.
Can a dog get pregnant outside her fertile window?+
No — fertilisation requires viable eggs, which only exist for approximately 4–5 days post-ovulation. However sperm can survive in the reproductive tract for up to 7 days, so breeding a few days before ovulation can still result in pregnancy.
Does breed size affect when ovulation occurs?+
Breed size has a modest influence on cycle timing — small breeds tend to have slightly earlier LH surges and shorter heat durations, while giant breeds sometimes ovulate later. However individual variation within a breed is much greater than breed size differences. The same dog will typically be relatively consistent cycle to cycle.
