How It Works
The canine fertile window is determined by three overlapping factors: ovulation timing, egg maturation, and sperm survival. Eggs mature approximately 48–72 hours after ovulation and remain viable for 4–5 days. Sperm can survive in the canine reproductive tract for up to 7 days. The intersection of viable eggs and viable sperm defines the fertile window.
In practical terms, the fertile window spans approximately days 11–18 from the first day of bleeding for an average dog, with peak fertility around days 13–15. The calculator estimates this window from the heat start date and cycle pattern, and also calculates the expected whelping date if conception occurs.
