What Is the Puppy Sleep Calculator?
Find out how much sleep your puppy needs by age — and whether their sleep patterns are normal.
Puppies sleep far more than adult dogs — and this is not laziness, it is a biological necessity. Sleep is when growth hormone is released, the immune system develops, and the brain consolidates the day's learning. New puppy owners often worry that their puppy is sleeping too much, or conversely, struggle to get their puppy to sleep through the night. This calculator gives you the expected sleep hours for your puppy's exact age.
Every result is based on published veterinary research and breed-size-specific growth data — not generic averages. This tool is completely free, works instantly in your browser, and requires no account or sign-up.

How It Works
Puppy sleep requirements decrease with age. Neonates (0-2 weeks) sleep up to 22 hours per day. By 8 weeks (the age most puppies come home), they still need 18-20 hours. By 6 months this reduces to 16-18 hours. Adult dogs sleep 12-14 hours. Sleep is not continuous — puppies cycle through short active periods and sleep throughout the day. Night-time sleep consolidation improves gradually from 8-16 weeks as the circadian rhythm matures.
