How It Works
Breed percentage in mixed-breed dogs follows simple Mendelian inheritance on a population level. Each parent contributes 50% of their genetic material to each offspring. A first-generation cross (F1) is 50% of each parent breed. An F1 bred back to a purebred (F1b) produces offspring that are 75% one breed and 25% another. By tracking the breed composition of each parent, breed percentages can be calculated with reasonable accuracy — though actual DNA inheritance has random variation around these averages.
For precise breed composition, commercial DNA tests (Embark, Wisdom Panel) are the most accurate method. This calculator provides the theoretical percentage based on known parentage.
