How It Works

Pavement absorbs and retains solar radiation significantly more than air. Research by the American Veterinary Medical Association and independent studies have shown that pavement temperature typically exceeds air temperature by 25–35°C on sunny days. Dark asphalt reaches the highest temperatures. The relationship is approximately: pavement temp = air temp × 2 − 5°C (at peak sun). The safe threshold for dog paws is approximately 40°C surface temperature — tissue damage occurs at 47°C within 60 seconds.
