How It Works

Canine longevity research has identified several key predictors beyond breed and size. The most significant factors include: body weight relative to ideal (overweight dogs live 1.8 years less on average per VCA study), neuter status (mixed effects — neutered dogs may live longer overall), dental health (periodontitis is associated with cardiac, renal, and hepatic disease), exercise level (moderate daily exercise is associated with 1–2 year increase in lifespan), and access to veterinary care. Size is the strongest single predictor — giant breeds age faster at a cellular level, with average lifespans of 7–10 years vs 14–16+ years for toy breeds.

Do neutered dogs live longer?+
