How It Works
A fluid bolus is a rapid intravenous fluid administration used to restore circulating blood volume in hypovolaemia, shock, or haemorrhagic states. The standard crystalloid bolus dose in dogs is 10–30 ml/kg given over 15–30 minutes. The maximum crystalloid bolus dose (shock dose) is 90 ml/kg/hr (one blood volume equivalent). In practice, boluses are given in increments of 10–20 ml/kg with reassessment of perfusion parameters (heart rate, mucous membrane colour, capillary refill time, blood pressure, mentation) between each bolus. Colloid boluses (hydroxyethyl starch, plasma, whole blood) are used at 5 ml/kg increments when colloid oncotic pressure support is needed.
