How It Works

The formula divides current weight by the proportion of adult size already achieved at the current age. For a medium breed, adult size is typically reached at 52 weeks. A puppy at 16 weeks is approximately 16/52 = 31% of the way to maturity. Dividing current weight by 0.31 gives the predicted adult weight.

Maturity age varies by breed size: small breeds mature at around 52 weeks, large at 78 weeks, and giant breeds at 104 weeks. A realistic range of plus or minus 12% is applied because genetics, nutrition, and sex all affect final adult weight.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the best age to predict adult weight?+
After 16 weeks for small and medium breeds, after 20 weeks for large breeds, and after 24 weeks for giant breeds. Earlier predictions have wider error margins.
Does sex affect adult weight?+
Yes. Females are typically 10-15% lighter than males of the same breed. If you know the sex, apply this adjustment mentally to the midpoint prediction.
My puppy's parents are different sizes — which do I use?+
Use the average of the two parent sizes, or choose the larger parent's size category for a conservative high estimate. Mixed breed predictions have inherently wider ranges.
How does this differ from the paw size method?+
The weight-at-age method is more reliable than paw size for known-age puppies. Paw size is useful when age is unknown. Both give estimates — neither is exact.
Should I buy adult-sized equipment now based on this prediction?+
For crates and beds, buying adult size now makes financial sense. For harnesses and collars, wait until closer to adult size as fit precision matters more for these.
