What Is the Dog Bromethalin Toxicity Calculator?

Assess bromethalin (neurotoxic rat poison) ingestion risk in dogs based on bait type, amount eaten, and dog weight.

Bromethalin is a neurotoxic rodenticide found in many common rat and mouse poisons. Unlike anticoagulant poisons (which affect clotting), bromethalin causes brain swelling and neurological failure. There is no antidote. Early decontamination — ideally within 4 hours of ingestion — is the only effective intervention, making this one of the most time-critical rodenticide emergencies.

Every result is based on published veterinary research and breed-size-specific growth data — not generic averages. This tool is completely free, works instantly in your browser, and requires no account or sign-up.

How It Works

Bromethalin uncouples oxidative phosphorylation in the central nervous system, reducing ATP production in myelin-producing cells. This causes cerebral oedema (brain swelling) which manifests as progressive neurological deterioration. In dogs, the toxic dose is approximately 3.65mg/kg of bromethalin. Rodenticide baits typically contain 0.01% bromethalin (0.1mg per gram of bait).

The calculator converts bait weight to bromethalin dose and compares to body weight to determine risk. Note that bromethalin can accumulate — relay toxicosis (eating rodents that ate the bait) is also possible.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are signs of bromethalin poisoning in dogs?+
Signs include muscle tremors, seizures, hyperexcitability, paralysis, loss of coordination, and coma. In severe poisonings, onset can be within 10 hours. In lower-dose exposures, a more gradual progression over 1–5 days is common, starting with hindlimb weakness.
Is bromethalin the same as brodifacoum?+
No — they are completely different poisons. Brodifacoum is an anticoagulant (blood-thinning) rodenticide treated with Vitamin K1. Bromethalin is a neurotoxin with no antidote. They require different treatments, so knowing which poison your dog ate is critical. Check the product label.
