How It Works

For weight loss, the calculator uses the target weight (not current) in the RER formula, then applies a 0.8 multiplier (80% of normal requirements). This creates a calorie deficit that drives safe, gradual weight loss of approximately 1-1.5% of bodyweight per week.

For weight gain, a 1.2 multiplier adds a controlled surplus. For maintenance, 1.0 multiplier maintains current weight. The estimated weeks to goal is calculated at 1.5% bodyweight loss or gain per week — the safe maximum.

Frequently Asked Questions

How fast should my dog lose weight?+
1-2% of total bodyweight per week is the safe range. For a 25kg dog, that means losing 250-500g per week. Faster than this risks muscle loss and nutritional deficiency.
My vet put my dog on a diet — should I use this instead?+
No. Follow your vet's specific plan. Use this as a reference to understand the principles, but your vet's recommendations take precedence.
My dog is always hungry on a diet — what can I do?+
Feed more frequent smaller meals (3 instead of 2). Add low-calorie vegetables like green beans or carrot. Use a slow feeder bowl. Ensure the calorie reduction is not too aggressive.
When should I reweigh?+
Every 2 weeks during a weight loss programme. If losing more than 2% per week, increase portions slightly. If not losing, decrease by 5-10%.
Can my dog gain weight healthily?+
Yes — gradual gain from illness or underfeeding is best managed with a 10-20% calorie surplus and high-quality protein to rebuild muscle mass, not just fat.
