How It Works

Fat content is assessed on three bases: as-fed percentage (what is printed on the label), dry matter percentage (fat content with moisture removed — best for food comparison), and percentage of calories from fat (how much of the food's energy comes from fat). The calorie-from-fat calculation uses Atwater modified factors: fat provides 8.5 kcal/g metabolisable energy in pet food.

For pancreatitis management, most veterinary guidelines recommend a dry matter fat content below 10% during acute episodes and 15% for long-term maintenance. For weight loss, a fat content below 20% DM is generally recommended.
