What Is the Dog Food Guaranteed Analysis Calculator?

Decode your dog food's guaranteed analysis label — convert all nutrients to dry matter basis and assess nutritional adequacy.

The guaranteed analysis panel on every dog food bag is the key to understanding what your dog is actually eating. But raw percentages are misleading without context — you need to know moisture content, dry matter values, and how each nutrient compares to AAFCO minimum requirements. This calculator decodes the entire label in one step.

Every result is based on published veterinary research and breed-size-specific growth data — not generic averages. This tool is completely free, works instantly in your browser, and requires no account or sign-up.

How It Works

The guaranteed analysis lists minimum guaranteed protein and fat, and maximum guaranteed fibre and moisture. Some brands also list calcium, phosphorus, omega fatty acids, and other nutrients. Converting these to dry matter basis (dividing by 1 minus moisture fraction) allows accurate comparison between any food types. Estimated metabolisable energy is calculated using modified Atwater factors: protein = 3.5 kcal/g, fat = 8.5 kcal/g, carbohydrate = 3.5 kcal/g.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the AAFCO statement and why does it matter?+
The AAFCO (Association of American Feed Control Officials) nutritional adequacy statement indicates that a food has been formulated to meet the established nutrient profiles for a specific life stage, or has passed feeding trials. Look for this statement on the label — it is the most important indicator of whether a food is nutritionally complete and balanced.
Where do I find ash content if it is not on the label?+
Most dry dog foods contain 6–8% ash as-fed. Wet foods typically contain 1–2% ash as-fed. If ash is not listed, use 6% for dry food and 2% for wet food as a reasonable estimate for the carbohydrate calculation.
