How It Works
Line breeding is a form of inbreeding — the distinction is one of degree, not mechanism. Any breeding between related dogs increases COI. The COI contribution of a common ancestor depends on how many generations back it appears on each side of the pedigree. The Wright formula quantifies this: F contribution = (0.5)^(n+m+1) where n = number of generations from sire to common ancestor and m = number from dam to common ancestor. Multiple appearances of the same ancestor on both sides compound the COI.
