How It Works

Line breeding is a form of inbreeding — the distinction is one of degree, not mechanism. Any breeding between related dogs increases COI. The COI contribution of a common ancestor depends on how many generations back it appears on each side of the pedigree. The Wright formula quantifies this: F contribution = (0.5)^(n+m+1) where n = number of generations from sire to common ancestor and m = number from dam to common ancestor. Multiple appearances of the same ancestor on both sides compound the COI.

What is the difference between line breeding and inbreeding?+
There is no biological difference — line breeding IS inbreeding, just at a lesser degree. The conventional distinction is that line breeding refers to matings of more distantly related dogs (3× or further) used to concentrate a specific ancestor, while inbreeding refers to close relations (parent × offspring, sibling × sibling). Both increase COI. The distinction is one of convention, not biology.
What is the line breeding notation system?+
Line breeding is described by the notation "n×m" where n = generations from the sire to the common ancestor, and m = generations from the dam to the same ancestor. A "2×3" line breeding means the common ancestor is the sire's grandparent and the dam's great-grandparent. Lower numbers mean closer relationship and higher COI impact.
