Dog Mitral Valve Disease Life Expectancy Calculator
Estimate life expectancy for dogs diagnosed with mitral valve disease based on ACVIM staging, breed, age, and treatment status.
What Is the Dog Mitral Valve Disease Life Expectancy Calculator?
Estimate life expectancy for dogs diagnosed with mitral valve disease based on ACVIM staging, breed, age, and treatment status.
Mitral valve disease (MVD) is the most common heart disease in dogs, affecting over 10% of all dogs and over 90% of Cavalier King Charles Spaniels by age 10. A diagnosis does not mean the end — many dogs live for years in early stages with no symptoms. This calculator provides evidence-based life expectancy estimates by ACVIM stage to help owners understand their dog's prognosis and plan accordingly.
Every result is based on published veterinary research and breed-size-specific growth data — not generic averages. This tool is completely free, works instantly in your browser, and requires no account or sign-up.

How It Works
MVD progresses through ACVIM consensus stages: Stage A (at-risk breed, no murmur), Stage B1 (murmur, no cardiac remodelling), Stage B2 (murmur with cardiac enlargement — requires Pimobendan per EPIC trial), Stage C (active heart failure — medical management required), Stage D (refractory heart failure — advanced therapy). Median survival from diagnosis of Stage C (first heart failure episode) is approximately 9–12 months without treatment and significantly longer with appropriate medical management. The EPIC trial demonstrated Pimobendan delays onset of heart failure from Stage B2 by a median of 15 months.
