How It Works

Fresh gas flow (FGF) requirements differ fundamentally between circuit types. Non-rebreathing circuits (recommended for dogs under 5kg) require high flow rates of 2–3× minute ventilation to prevent rebreathing of CO2. Rebreathing circle systems can use much lower flows — as low as 10ml/kg/min for low-flow anaesthesia in larger dogs. Standard maintenance flow for circle systems is typically 20–30ml/kg/min. Induction typically requires higher flows (50–100ml/kg/min) to fill the circuit.

What is the difference between a circle and non-rebreathing system?+
A circle (rebreathing) system recirculates exhaled gas through a CO2 absorber (soda lime or Baralyme) before it is rebreathed. This allows low fresh gas flows, reducing waste gas and cost. Non-rebreathing systems (Bain, Mapleson) exhaust all exhaled gas to the scavenging system and require high fresh gas flows (2–3× minute ventilation) to prevent CO2 rebreathing. Non-rebreathing is preferred for dogs under 5kg to avoid the resistance of rebreathing valves.
