How It Works
The urine protein:creatinine (UPC) ratio quantifies proteinuria independently of urine concentration, making it a reliable measure of glomerular and tubular protein loss. A single urine sample is sufficient — 24-hour collection is not required in veterinary medicine as the ratio corrects for urine concentration. Normal UPC in dogs: <0.2. Borderline proteinuria: 0.2–0.5. Clinically significant proteinuria: >0.5. Marked proteinuria (>2.0) suggests glomerulonephropathy (immune-mediated, infectious, or familial). Proteinuria is a major independent risk factor for CKD progression and cardiovascular disease in dogs.
IRIS guidelines recommend treatment of proteinuria in CKD dogs when UPC >0.5 using ACE inhibitors or ARBs to reduce glomerular hypertension.
