Dog Ramp Slope Calculator
Calculate the correct ramp length and angle for your dog's size, age, and mobility needs — for cars, sofas, or beds.
What Is the Dog Ramp Slope Calculator?
Calculate the correct ramp length and angle for your dog's size, age, and mobility needs — for cars, sofas, or beds.
Ramps are essential for dogs with arthritis, hip dysplasia, intervertebral disc disease (IVDD), post-surgical recovery, or simply old age. But a ramp that is too steep is as bad as no ramp at all. This calculator determines the correct ramp length and angle based on the height to be climbed and your dog's mobility level.
Every result is based on published veterinary research and breed-size-specific growth data — not generic averages. This tool is completely free, works instantly in your browser, and requires no account or sign-up.

How It Works
The ideal ramp angle for dogs depends on mobility level. Fully mobile healthy dogs can manage up to 30°, but dogs with joint pain, muscle weakness, or neurological conditions need a much shallower incline — ideally 18–22°. The relationship between rise (height to climb), run (ramp length), and angle is: angle = arctan(rise ÷ run). Ramp width should be at least 30% wider than the dog's shoulder width to prevent slipping off the edge.
