How It Works
This calculator uses the percentage-of-bodyweight method calibrated specifically for puppies. Unlike adult dogs where we use the RER formula, puppies are growing so rapidly that their needs are better expressed as a percentage of current bodyweight. A 6-week-old puppy needs approximately 8% of bodyweight in food daily. By 6 months that drops to around 5-5.5%.
Meal frequency also decreases as puppies age — from 4 meals at 8 weeks down to 2 meals by 5-6 months. Giant breeds get a slight upward adjustment in early weeks because their growth demands are higher. Toy breeds get a slight downward adjustment to prevent overfeeding.
