Dog Coat Color Genetics Calculator
Predict probable puppy coat colors from parent genotypes using Mendelian genetics for the B and D loci.
What Is the Dog Coat Color Genetics Calculator?
Predict probable puppy coat colors from parent genotypes using Mendelian genetics for the B and D loci.
Predict what coat colors your litter might produce. Enter the parental genotypes for the B locus (black/brown) and D locus (dilution) to see the probability of each color in the puppies.
Every result is based on published veterinary research and breed-size-specific growth data — not generic averages. This tool is completely free, works instantly in your browser, and requires no account or sign-up.

How It Works
Dog coat color at the B locus is determined by the TYRP1 gene — B (black) is dominant over b (brown/chocolate). A dog needs two copies of b to be brown. The D locus controls dilution — dd dilutes black to blue/grey and brown to lilac/isabella. The calculator crosses parental genotypes at both loci to give percentage probabilities for each color combination.
Full color genetics involves many additional loci (E for yellow, A for sable and tan points, K for dominant black). DNA testing panels cover all relevant loci for complete prediction.
