How It Works

French Bulldog coat colour involves multiple interacting loci. The A locus determines base pattern: sable/fawn (Ay), brindle (kbr dominance at K locus), tan points (at). The K locus determines brindle expression. The B locus determines black vs chocolate. The D locus determines dilution (blue = dd, dilutes black to blue and chocolate to lilac). The E locus controls yellow/cream. The M locus controls merle — double merle carries severe health risks.

Note: Blue, lilac, chocolate, and merle French Bulldogs are not recognised by the AKC or KC breed standard and may be associated with increased health risks from irresponsible breeding practices targeting these colours.

What are the standard French Bulldog colors?+
AKC and Kennel Club recognised colours include: fawn (in all shades), brindle, and pied (predominantly white with coloured patches). Cream is also accepted by many kennel clubs. Blue, lilac, chocolate, merle, tan points, and other "rare" or "exotic" colours are not recognised by the major kennel clubs and are associated with increased prices often based on rarity rather than quality.
Are blue and lilac French Bulldogs healthy?+
The dilute (d) allele responsible for blue and lilac coloring in French Bulldogs has been associated with Colour Dilution Alopecia (CDA) — a skin and coat condition causing hair loss and skin infections. Not all dilute dogs are affected, but the risk is higher than in non-dilute dogs. Additionally, the pursuit of rare colours has led to irresponsible breeding practices in some lines.
