How It Works
French Bulldog coat colour involves multiple interacting loci. The A locus determines base pattern: sable/fawn (Ay), brindle (kbr dominance at K locus), tan points (at). The K locus determines brindle expression. The B locus determines black vs chocolate. The D locus determines dilution (blue = dd, dilutes black to blue and chocolate to lilac). The E locus controls yellow/cream. The M locus controls merle — double merle carries severe health risks.
Note: Blue, lilac, chocolate, and merle French Bulldogs are not recognised by the AKC or KC breed standard and may be associated with increased health risks from irresponsible breeding practices targeting these colours.
