How It Works

Calculated osmolality = 2 × Na⁺ + (glucose in mg/dL / 18) + (BUN in mg/dL / 2.8). The normal canine reference range is approximately 280-310 mOsm/kg. The osmol gap is the difference between measured (by freezing point depression osmometer) and calculated osmolality — normally less than 10 mOsm/kg. A gap above 10 suggests unmeasured osmoles: ethylene glycol (most important), methanol, isopropanol, or mannitol.
