How It Works

Platelet count assessment in dogs requires both the absolute count and consideration of platelet clumping (which causes falsely low counts) and platelet size (large platelets indicate active bone marrow response). Normal platelet count in dogs: 170,000–400,000 per μL. Thrombocytopaenia is classified as: mild (100,000–170,000/μL — monitor), moderate (50,000–100,000/μL — haemorrhage risk with trauma), severe (<50,000/μL — spontaneous haemorrhage risk), and critical (<20,000/μL — immediate risk). The estimated platelet count from blood smear can be calculated as: count of platelets per high-power field × 15,000 = approximate platelets/μL. This calculator assesses thrombocytopaenia severity and guides clinical urgency.
