How It Works

A ketogenic diet for dogs typically targets very high fat (70–80% of calories), moderate protein (15–20% of calories), and minimal carbohydrates (under 5% of calories). The ketogenic ratio — fat to (protein + carbohydrate) by grams — is typically 2:1 to 4:1 in veterinary applications. Unlike human ketogenic diets, canine keto must still meet AAFCO amino acid, vitamin, and mineral requirements. These diets should always be formulated and supervised by a veterinary nutritionist.
