DER = RER × life stage factor. RER (70 × weight^0.75) gives the metabolic baseline. The factor adjusts for actual energy expenditure. A lactating dog at factor 3.0 needs triple her resting calories. A sedentary senior at 0.7 needs only 70% of her resting rate.
