How It Works

Phosphorus requirements vary dramatically by life stage and health status. AAFCO minimum for adult dogs is 0.5% DM phosphorus. Dogs with CKD benefit from restriction to 0.2–0.5% DM depending on disease stage (IRIS staging). Calcium:phosphorus ratio should ideally be 1:1 to 2:1 — imbalance causes either skeletal problems (excess phosphorus) or hypocalcaemia (excess calcium).

Why does phosphorus matter so much for dogs with kidney disease?+
Damaged kidneys cannot effectively excrete phosphorus, leading to hyperphosphataemia. Excess phosphorus promotes calcium-phosphate precipitation in kidney tissue (renal mineralisation), accelerating further kidney damage. It also stimulates PTH (parathyroid hormone) secretion causing secondary hyperparathyroidism, which further worsens mineral metabolism. Phosphorus restriction consistently slows CKD progression in clinical studies.
What is a good Ca:P ratio for dogs?+
The ideal calcium to phosphorus ratio for adult dogs is 1:1 to 2:1 (more calcium than phosphorus). Ratios outside this range — particularly excess phosphorus relative to calcium — can cause skeletal abnormalities and calcium-phosphorus imbalance.
