How It Works

Tidal volume (VT) for mechanical ventilation in dogs is standardly calculated at 10–15ml/kg for healthy lungs, or 6–8ml/kg for lung-protective ventilation in ARDS/pneumonia cases. Respiratory rate is typically set at 8–15 breaths/minute to achieve a minute ventilation of 150–250ml/kg/min. Peak inspiratory pressure should ideally be kept below 20cmH2O. I:E ratio is typically 1:2 for most patients.

What is normal tidal volume for dogs?+
Spontaneous (unassisted) tidal volume in awake dogs is approximately 10–15ml/kg. For mechanical ventilation in dogs with normal lungs, 10–15ml/kg is standard. For lung-protective ventilation in dogs with ARDS, pneumonia, or pulmonary contusions, 6–8ml/kg is recommended to minimise ventilator-induced lung injury.
What is peak inspiratory pressure (PIP) and why does it matter?+
PIP is the maximum airway pressure achieved during inspiration. Pressures above 20–25cmH2O increase the risk of barotrauma (pressure-induced lung injury) and pneumothorax. During mechanical ventilation, aim to keep PIP below 20cmH2O — adjust tidal volume and rate to achieve adequate ventilation while staying within this pressure limit.
