What Is the Dog Protein Calculator?

Calculate how much protein your dog needs daily and whether their current food is meeting that target.

Protein is the most critical macronutrient in a dog's diet. It supports muscle maintenance, immune function, skin and coat health, and virtually every body process. This calculator shows your dog's daily protein requirement in grams.

Every result is based on published veterinary research and breed-size-specific growth data — not generic averages. This tool is completely free, works instantly in your browser, and requires no account or sign-up.

How It Works

Dogs require protein expressed as grams per kilogram of bodyweight. The National Research Council (NRC) recommends a minimum of 4g of digestible protein per kilogram of bodyweight per day for adult dogs. Puppies and active dogs need more — 6g/kg/day is a reasonable target.

This calculator multiplies your food's protein percentage by the daily gram amount to get actual protein delivered, then compares it to the minimum requirement for your dog's weight and life stage.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much protein does my dog actually need?+
NRC minimum: 4g digestible protein per kg bodyweight per day for adults. Puppies need 6g/kg/day. Active and working dogs benefit from 6-8g/kg/day.
Can dogs have too much protein?+
For healthy dogs with normal kidney function, excess dietary protein is simply excreted. However, dogs with pre-existing kidney disease should have protein intake managed carefully — consult your vet.
Is plant protein as good as animal protein for dogs?+
Animal proteins generally have higher biological availability and a complete amino acid profile. Plant proteins can be part of a balanced diet but should not be the primary source.
My food protein seems low — should I switch foods?+
Check the dry matter percentage first — wet foods look low in protein because of water content. On a dry matter basis, many wet foods have high protein. If genuinely low, consider a higher-protein option.
Does protein help with coat and skin health?+
Yes. Protein provides amino acids including cysteine and methionine, which are essential for keratin production. A shiny coat and healthy skin are often signs of adequate protein intake.
