📖 About Labrador Retrievers

Health, nutrition and care information specific to this breed

The Labrador Retriever is the world's most popular dog breed for good reason — they are intelligent, loyal, endlessly enthusiastic, and deeply food-motivated. Originally bred in Newfoundland as fishing and retrieving dogs, Labs today excel as family companions, guide dogs, search and rescue dogs, and detection dogs.

Labradors come in three coat colours — black, yellow, and chocolate — with no difference in temperament or health between them. They reach adult size between 12 and 18 months but may not fully mature mentally until age 3. Males typically weigh 29–36 kg; females 25–32 kg.

Weight Management Is Critical

Labradors have a genetic mutation in the POMC gene that affects their sense of satiety — they genuinely do not feel full the way other dogs do. This makes them highly prone to obesity. Studies show up to 60% of Labradors are overweight. Excess weight dramatically increases the risk of hip dysplasia progression, cruciate ligament tears, and diabetes. Use our Calorie Calculator to set precise daily portions and our Ideal Weight Calculator to monitor body condition.

Lifespan and Ageing

Labradors typically live 10–12 years. Chocolate Labradors have a shorter median lifespan (10.7 years) compared to black and yellow Labs (12.1 years), likely due to higher rates of skin and ear conditions associated with the chocolate coat gene. Senior Labs (8+ years) benefit from joint supplements and reduced calorie intake as metabolism slows.

Feeding & Nutrition

Measure every meal — never free feed. RER × 1.6 (active) or × 1.4 (neutered/less active). High-protein, moderate-fat kibble. Avoid high-calorie treats. Split into 2 meals daily to reduce bloat risk.

🏃

Exercise & Activity

High exercise need: 1–2 hours daily for adults. Swimming is ideal — low joint impact. Avoid intense exercise before age 12–18 months to protect developing growth plates. Senior Labs need 30–45 minutes of gentle walking.
