📖 About Golden Retrievers

Health, nutrition and care information specific to this breed

The Golden Retriever is one of the most beloved family dogs worldwide — renowned for their gentle temperament, patience with children, and eagerness to please. Originally bred in Scotland in the mid-1800s by Lord Tweedmouth, they were developed for retrieving game from both land and water.

Golden Retrievers are medium-to-large dogs, males weighing 29–34 kg and females 25–29 kg. They have a beautiful dense double coat that requires regular grooming and sheds seasonally. They are highly social and do not do well when left alone for extended periods.

Cancer — The Most Significant Health Concern

Golden Retrievers have an exceptionally high cancer rate — studies suggest 57–61% of Goldens will develop cancer in their lifetime (compared to approximately 27% for all dogs). Haemangiosarcoma, lymphoma, mast cell tumours, and osteosarcoma are the most common types. American Goldens appear to have higher rates than European lines. Annual veterinary checks including blood panels are strongly recommended from age 6 onward.

Weight and Joint Health

Like Labradors, Goldens have a strong food motivation and are prone to obesity. Excess body weight significantly increases the already elevated cancer risk and accelerates hip and elbow dysplasia progression. Target BCS 4–5 strictly. The Life Expectancy Calculator factors in weight as a key variable — keeping a Golden lean can meaningfully extend healthy lifespan.

Heart and Skin Conditions

Subvalvular aortic stenosis (SAS), a heart defect, occurs in Goldens at higher rates than many breeds. Skin conditions including allergic dermatitis, hot spots, and ear infections are common due to their dense, moisture-retaining coat. Regular ear cleaning and coat maintenance are important preventive measures.

Very high cancer rates (haemangiosarcoma, lymphoma, osteosarcoma), hip and elbow dysplasia, subvalvular aortic stenosis, hypothyroidism, allergic skin disease, ear infections.

Feeding & Nutrition

RER × 1.4–1.6 for adults. Lean body condition (BCS 4-5) is critical given high cancer risk. Antioxidant-rich foods may offer some protective benefit. Two measured meals daily. Avoid overfeeding treats.

🏃

Exercise & Activity

Moderate-high: 1–2 hours daily. Excellent swimmers — low-impact exercise ideal for those with joint issues. Fetch and retrieving activities utilise natural instincts. After age 8, reduce intensity and monitor for fatigue.
