📖 About Rottweilers

Health, nutrition and care information specific to this breed

The Rottweiler is a powerful, self-assured working breed with roots in Roman cattle-herding dogs. Modern Rottweilers serve as police dogs, search and rescue dogs, and therapy dogs, while also being devoted family companions when properly trained and socialised. They are one of the strongest dog breeds relative to body size.

Male Rottweilers weigh 50–60 kg; females 35–48 kg. Despite their imposing appearance, well-bred Rottweilers are calm, confident, and deeply loyal. They are not naturally aggressive but do have strong guarding instincts that require early socialisation and experienced handling.

Osteosarcoma — The Primary Cancer Risk

Rottweilers have one of the highest rates of osteosarcoma (bone cancer) among all breeds — approximately 12% of Rottweilers will develop this aggressive cancer, typically in the long bones of the legs. Early neutering before 12 months has been associated with significantly increased osteosarcoma risk in this breed specifically. Discussions with your vet about neutering timing are strongly recommended.

Cardiac and Hip Health

Subaortic stenosis (SAS) — a congenital heart defect — is present in approximately 9% of Rottweilers, one of the highest rates among large breeds. Pre-purchase cardiac screening by a cardiologist is highly advisable. Hip and elbow dysplasia are common, and weight management from puppyhood is critical. A lean BCS prevents unnecessary stress on developing joints — use our Rottweiler Calorie Calculator to set appropriate growing and adult calorie targets.

GDV (Bloat)

Rottweilers are deep-chested and at significant risk for Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus. Prophylactic gastropexy at time of neutering is worth serious consideration. Feed two meals daily, restrict post-meal exercise, and familiarise yourself with the signs: distended abdomen, unproductive retching, and sudden deterioration.

Feeding & Nutrition

RER × 1.5–1.7 for active adults; × 1.3 for neutered indoor dogs. Large kibble or raw meaty bones to slow eating. Two meals daily from floor level. Lean BCS essential — obese Rottweilers face dramatically compounded health risks.

🏃

Exercise & Activity

High exercise need: 1.5–2 hours daily for adult dogs. Strong, athletic breed that thrives on work — weight-pulling, schutzhund, tracking. Limit hard surface running in puppies under 18 months. Senior dogs may develop joint issues — swimming is ideal.
