📖 About Boxers

Health, nutrition and care information specific to this breed

The Boxer is a medium-to-large German breed known for their playful, energetic, and clownish personality. Developed in the 19th century from the now-extinct Bullenbeisser, Boxers were used as hunting dogs, messenger dogs in WWI and WWII, and early guide dogs. Today they are popular family dogs, known for being particularly gentle with children.

Boxers weigh 22–32 kg and typically live 10–12 years. They have a distinctive pushed-in face (brachycephalic, though less severely than Bulldogs), a short coat, and a natural bobtail in some lines. They are known for "kidney bending" — pressing their whole body against their favourite people.

Arrhythmogenic Right Ventricular Cardiomyopathy (ARVC)

ARVC — also called Boxer cardiomyopathy — is a hereditary heart condition unique to the breed. The heart muscle is replaced by fatty and fibrous tissue, causing abnormal heart rhythms (arrhythmias) that can lead to sudden death. Annual cardiac Holter monitoring is recommended for all Boxers from age 2 onward, especially breeding stock. A genetic test is available.

Cancer Rates

Boxers have above-average cancer rates, particularly mast cell tumours, lymphoma, and brain tumours. White Boxers — those born with more than one-third white colouring — also have higher rates of deafness. Annual full physical examinations with attention to lymph nodes and skin lumps are important from age 6 onward.

Brachycephalic Considerations

While less severe than Bulldogs or Pugs, Boxers are brachycephalic and share heat intolerance and exercise limitation during hot weather. Exercise should be restricted when temperatures exceed 20°C.

Feeding & Nutrition

RER × 1.6–1.8 for active young adults; × 1.4 for older dogs. Two meals from floor level. Slow feeder bowls recommended. High-quality protein to maintain muscle mass. Monitor weight carefully as metabolism slows after age 5.

Exercise & Activity

High: 1–1.5 hours daily for young adults. Restrict in heat. Excellent at agility, tracking, and obedience. Senior Boxers (7+) may have cardiac limitations — consult your vet before increasing exercise intensity.
