Doberman Pinscher Calculators

The Doberman Pinscher is a sleek, powerful working breed developed in Germany in the 1890s by tax collector Louis Dobermann, who wanted an alert, loyal protection dog. Modern Dobermans are highly intelligent, athletic, and intensely loyal to their families. They are used worldwide as police dogs, military dogs, and personal protection dogs.

Males weigh 34–45 kg; females 27–36 kg. They are among the most elegant-looking breeds — lean, muscular, and built for speed and endurance. Life expectancy is 10–13 years, though cardiac disease often shortens this significantly.

Dilated Cardiomyopathy (DCM) — The Primary Killer

DCM affects an estimated 40–58% of Dobermans — the highest prevalence of any breed. Many affected dogs show no symptoms until sudden cardiac death or congestive heart failure. The European Dobermann Working Group recommends annual cardiac screening (echocardiogram + 24-hour Holter monitor) from age 2 onward. A genetic mutation (PDK4 and STRN genes) has been identified and testing is available. This is genuinely one of the most important health tests in all of dog breeding.

von Willebrand's Disease (vWD)

vWD is the most common inherited bleeding disorder in dogs, and Dobermans have one of the highest carrier rates of any breed. Type 1 vWD causes prolonged bleeding from wounds or during surgery. DNA testing before any surgical procedure is strongly recommended. Most Dobermans with Type 1 vWD live normal lives but require pre-surgical preparation.

Wobbler Syndrome and Weight
