Border Collie Calculators

The Border Collie is widely regarded as the most intelligent dog breed in the world. Developed on the English-Scottish border for herding sheep, they are characterised by their intense herding instinct, athletic ability, and extraordinary trainability. They hold world records in obedience, agility, and problem-solving tests.

Border Collies weigh 12–20 kg and live 12–15 years. They have two coat varieties (rough and smooth) in a wide range of colours. An under-stimulated Border Collie is one of the most challenging dogs imaginable — obsessive, destructive, and anxious. They need a job. They are categorically unsuitable for sedentary households.

Mental Stimulation — As Important As Physical Exercise

Border Collies need both physical exercise (1.5–2 hours daily) AND significant mental stimulation. A physically-exercised but mentally-bored Border Collie will still develop behavioural problems — obsessive ball chasing, fence running, herding children and other pets. Collie Eye Anomaly (CEA) and MDR1

CEA is a hereditary eye condition present in 70–85% of Border Collies (though most affected dogs have mild disease not affecting vision). DNA testing of breeding stock is standard practice. The MDR1 drug sensitivity mutation also occurs in Border Collies (though at lower frequency than in Australian Shepherds) — testing is recommended before any drug administration.

Hip Dysplasia and Seizure Disorders

Both hip dysplasia and epilepsy occur with above-average frequency in the breed. OFA hip screening of breeding stock is important. Epilepsy in Border Collies often presents between 2–5 years and is manageable with medication in most cases.
