Cane Corso Calculators

The Cane Corso is an ancient Italian mastiff breed with roots in the Roman war dogs of antiquity. Their name derives from the Latin "Cohors" meaning guardian or protector. Nearly extinct by the mid-20th century, the breed was recovered by Italian enthusiasts and is now gaining popularity worldwide as a devoted guardian dog.

Cane Corsos are large to giant dogs — males weigh 45–65 kg; females 40–50 kg — with a lifespan of 9–12 years. Despite their imposing appearance, well-bred Cane Corsos are calm, stable, and deeply affectionate with their families. They require experienced handling, early socialisation, and consistent training. They are not suitable for first-time dog owners.

Hip and Elbow Dysplasia

As with most large and giant breeds, hip and elbow dysplasia have significant prevalence in the Cane Corso. Maintaining lean body weight from puppyhood through adulthood is the most impactful owner-controlled intervention. Cardiac Disease and Bloat

Dilated cardiomyopathy and aortic stenosis occur in the breed at above-average rates. Annual cardiac auscultation is recommended from age 3. As a deep-chested giant breed, GDV risk is significant — prophylactic gastropexy is recommended at time of neutering. Feed three meals as puppies and two as adults, always from floor level, and restrict exercise 2 hours post-meal.

Eyelid Issues

Ectropion (outward-rolling eyelid) and entropion (inward-rolling eyelid) both occur in Cane Corsos due to the facial skin folds. Both cause chronic eye irritation and potential corneal damage. Surgical correction is effective in severe cases.
