How It Works
Dachshund color genetics follows standard Mendelian principles. Base colors include red (dominant), black and tan, chocolate and tan, cream, and dilute (blue/Isabella) variants. The dapple pattern is caused by a dominant merle gene — one copy creates the dapple pattern, but two copies (double dapple) causes severe developmental defects including blindness, deafness, missing or reduced eyes, and white patching.
