It works by iterating through every day of your dog's projected lifespan, converting their age to human-equivalent years at each point, and finding where that value matches your own age on that date.
Because dog ageing is non-linear — rapid in year one, then slowing based on breed size — this overlap date is often earlier than people expect. A medium breed dog born when their owner is 30 will typically "catch up" to their owner within about 2–3 years of life.
