How It Works
Carprofen inhibits cyclooxygenase (COX) enzymes, which reduces prostaglandin synthesis and provides anti-inflammatory effects. At overdose, COX inhibition reduces protective prostaglandins in the stomach lining and afferent arterioles of the kidney, causing GI ulceration and renal vasoconstriction. The therapeutic dose is 2–4mg/kg daily. GI toxicity begins to manifest above approximately 10mg/kg, and significant renal toxicity above 50mg/kg.
