Dog Overweight Calculator
Assess whether your dog is overweight, obese, or underweight using body condition score and weight-for-breed standards.
What Is the Dog Overweight Calculator?
Assess whether your dog is overweight, obese, or underweight using body condition score and weight-for-breed standards.
Over 50% of dogs in the UK and US are classified as overweight or obese — yet most owners do not recognise it. Dogs carry excess weight differently from humans: it accumulates around the ribcage, abdomen, and base of tail. This calculator uses body condition scoring (BCS) combined with weight data to assess your dog's body composition and calculate their ideal target weight.
Every result is based on published veterinary research and breed-size-specific growth data — not generic averages. This tool is completely free, works instantly in your browser, and requires no account or sign-up.

How It Works
The Body Condition Score (BCS) is a 9-point scale used by veterinarians globally (WSAVA standard). A score of 4–5 is ideal. Each point above 5 represents approximately 10% excess body weight. An ideal weight can therefore be estimated from BCS: ideal weight = current weight ÷ (1 + ((BCS−5) × 0.1)). This calculator also estimates the calorie deficit needed to achieve safe weight loss at 1–2% of body weight per week.
