How It Works
Subcutaneous (SQ) fluids are administered under the skin, typically over the dorsal neck/scruff area, for dogs that are mildly dehydrated, unable to drink adequately, or receiving home supportive care. SQ fluid absorption occurs over 6–8 hours, making it unsuitable for moderate-severe dehydration or haemodynamic compromise where IV administration is required. Only isotonic crystalloid fluids (0.9% NaCl or Hartmann's/Lactated Ringer's) should be given subcutaneously — hypertonic solutions, dextrose-containing fluids, and potassium supplements at high concentrations should not be given SQ as they cause tissue irritation and pain. Maximum SQ volume per site in dogs: approximately 10 ml/kg per site, with multiple sites used for larger volumes.
