How It Works
This calculator works in both directions — dog years to human years, and human years to dog years — using the same multi-stage veterinary aging model as our standard Dog Age Calculator.
Dog to Human: Uses the published three-phase model. Year 1 equates to approximately 15 human years for medium breeds. Year 2 adds roughly 9 more. From year 3 onwards, each dog year adds 4–7 human years depending on breed size.
Human to Dog: There is no exact mathematical reverse of a non-linear formula, so the reverse calculation uses an iterative approximation — finding the dog age whose forward conversion most closely matches the human age entered. Results are accurate within half a year for most inputs.
Both directions account for breed size because size is the primary biological factor in canine ageing rates.
